Mood post: my fight against adult acne

It's no coincidence that we formulated our first mask to soothe adult acne. At 30, Laure Bouguen, founder of HO KARAN, has suffered from acne for several years for various reasons. A fight that she tells with an open heart, from awareness to concrete solutions that have proven themselves!

Adult acne: my awareness at 30

We've heard a lot about acne over the past two years, and cosmetic marketers have even come up with a fitting name to sell a new “mascné” problem, acne created by wearing a mask. Could acne be the new wrinkle? A vein in the cosmetics industry to make women feel guilty - ever younger - and sell them creams, LEDs, make-up...?

I don't like to talk about anti-aging benefits for HO KARAN products because I don't want to make our customers feel guilty about their aging skin. In the same way I have never spoken too much about acne which affects nearly 6 million people in France, and more and more adult women, 41% of 25-40 year olds according to certain studies * (*2017 research review in “The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology”)

Visible skin pores, comedones, inflammation… are all part of our skin's daily life and I would like to help women and men to normalize them, rather than making them complex factors. I actually wrote a mood post about it last year.healthy skin rather than perfect skin” to share my journey with acne following a diagnosis of PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). I had just stopped taking the pill after more than a decade on synthetic hormones, the purpose of which, beyond contraception, was to lower my androgen levels, which cause me acne and hirsutism (particularly excessive facial hair).

Acne is a very intimate subject because it is a deep narcissistic wound. I did not talk about it often until now because I had the feeling of not being able to propose solutions. 2 years ago I started a great research to understand the root causes of acne and especially adult acne.. I started by going to see a naturopath, but I had the impression that a psychological approach was missing. So I continued with weekly support for 3 months with Alexandra Vignon (program on edge) at the end of which I had the feeling of having the keys to face my acne. Alexandra is a trained anthropologist, sophrologist, naturopath and health educator according to Ayurveda. She specializes in the link between the skin and the brain, and accompanies women suffering from anxiety-related acne.

A few months after this support, I decided to stop taking the pill, which partly hid my acne - as well as all the other symptoms linked to hyperandrogenism - and 15 months later, after going through the hormonal roller coaster, I share with you my deep conviction: acne and stress are intimately linked.

Lifestyle and stress, the root causes of adult acne for me (and most of us!)

If adolescent acne is part of the natural hormonal cycles, more and more women from 25-30 years old are complaining of so-called adult acne, a particularly recalcitrant form. Disclaimer: it involves many factors, and there is no magic formula. If you want to get rid of it, or at least reduce it, you will have to work on its multiple causes, it is the famous holistic approach at the heart of HO KARAN's vision which takes into account: food, hygiene cosmetics, pollution, endocrine disruptors, and above all stress!

Five months after stopping my pill I have an ultrasound and, oh miracle, I no longer have any ovarian cysts. Yet I still have all the syndromes of PCOS and hyperandrogenism: acne, hirsutism, weight gain, irregular menstruation… As often, the dermatologist offers me anti-androgens to limit my acne, for the whole purpose of my journey. is to understand how my body works naturally and the root causes of my inflammation. Because the skin is our barometer, the reflection of our state of stress, I no longer wish to see acne as an injury but as an alert sent to me by my body in the face of a dysfunction.

Androgens are male hormones primarily represented by testosterone. In women, they are produced by the ovaries but also the adrenals. But when we feel stress, our adrenal glands release a hormone called cortisol into the bloodstream. As we explain in the article “Where does adult acne come from""The role of cortisol is to help the body gather energy to respond to a threat that the brain perceives, but when the stress becomes constant and cortisol levels explode, things get complicated. Who says high level of cortisol, says activation of sebocytes, these famous cells that produce sebum. These activated sebocytes also release cytokines, one of the main components contributing to acne breakouts. Additionally, chronic stress can lead to an imbalanced microbiome in which acne-causing bacteria can thrive.”

Chronic stress is therefore a direct cause of adult acne due to the hormonal stimulation it causes, but also an indirect cause due to the behaviors it induces. : cravings for sugar which cause a spike in insulin (a hormone also linked to the production of sebum), lack of sleep which affects the skin, consumption of cigarettes and alcohol which unbalance the microbiota and promote the proliferation of bacteria responsible for acne…

Overcoming adult acne: the holistic remedies that have proven themselves at home!

If one wishes to get rid of adult acne it is therefore necessary to have a holistic approach based on the reduction of the stress of the mind, the body and the skin.

I always thought that I was a low-stress person, capable of “taking it”. Yet after two herniated discs at age 29 I had to admit that if my mind was fooling me, my body surely had some messages for me. Acne is one of these messengers. This acne breakout is stress, hormones, inner turmoil. If instability was once very much linked to adolescence, our time is particularly unstable and a source of anxiety for adults as well: hyperactive life, solitary management of children, uncertain future, divorce...

1. Think about the psychological causes of acne

What I learned with Alexandra Vignon is the need to let go. That I could be ambitious, want to carry out tons of projects, but also give a damn. That I had to learn to express myself in the first person and stop hiding behind “we” or relativizing my problems in relation to those of others. Acne forces you to look yourself in the face, to look within yourself. Alexandra also helped me to live more in the present moment rather than in a hypothetical future after which I was always running. This support was a first step for me towards other alternative medicines (sophrology, meditation, hypnosis, etc.) until I explored ayahuasca a shamanic plant that helps to connect to oneself and to the world. In a more pragmatic and accessible version, if you suffer from acne and you have tested all the creams in the world, you can simply engage in psychological monitoring.

2. Use "crutches" - which help to limit the stress of the mind and the skin - of which CBD is a part

Le endocannabinoid system is an inflammation regulating system. Its receptors act on the central nervous system and the immune system.

The ingestion of CBD will therefore reduce stress, anxiety, and limit the associated overproduction of cortisol. I recommend you for this the Antidote 10% our organic hemp oil enriched with CBD broad spectrum, up to one pipette per day.

3. Good cosmetic hygiene

Acne being the consequence of bacterial proliferation and inflammation of the sebaceous glands, it is important to have good cosmetic hygiene

That's why we developed HO KARAN's very first anti-acne mask, Cure of Greenery, which combines anti-bacterial active ingredients (essential oils of hemp, tea tree, thyme, savory, sage), anti-blemish active ingredients (niacinamide, zinc) and active ingredients that limit inflammation and promote regeneration (CBD broad spectrum and spirulina). You can apply it twice a week to the entire face, upper back, and chest.

I know that it is very tempting to break through her white pimples which are perceived as a sign of an unhealthy lifestyle. But to avoid pigmentary demarcations and potential scars, I strongly advise against touching them. Have a little patience and dry them with Farewell Buttons, the first anti-imperfection roll-on with CBD and niacinamide. This roll-on CBD and CBG brings a purifying and anti-inflammatory action in order to accelerate the natural cycle of the formation and the disappearance of the imperfection. I also recommend our cannabooster detox morning and evening to limit bacterial proliferation, regulate sebum production without drying out your skin.

To reduce potential purple spots that may appear during the healing of the pimple you can apply theAntidote as an evening oil on the skin to accelerate its regeneration.

4. In the meantime: camouflage your imperfections

I'm the first to not appreciate my own self-reflection when I have acne, while wishing to stay natural. The whole bet is to find the right balance between self-esteem and not hiding behind a mask of foundation without which we are no longer able to live and go out.

Here are some combination and non-comedogenic makeup products that I use:concealer Ilia to hide redness, loose mineral powder Toleriane from La Roche Posay, and from time to time, so as not to suffocate the skin too much when I'm really not comfortable with my pimples, the liquid foundation, Dermablend from Vichy that I mix with SPF 30 Urban Feel Good from Seventy one to make it more liquid and to have sun protection.

You will have understood if to treat adult acne there are no miracle creams, there are nevertheless plenty of solutions and above all the quest of a lifetime: to find serenity.
